What happens when a producer in Asia loses its most important sales market?

I am Siggi. I know the chemistry in Asia.

In discussions with chemical producers in China and India, I am almost always shown the same figures: capacity, utilisation and price. These figures are important. But they only show me the production side.

I also want to understand the sales side. That is why I ask which countries take the largest volumes and how strongly the business is concentrated in individual markets.

There is a very practical reason for this. If a producer loses access to an important sales market, trade flows may shift. Volumes that were previously intended for another region may also be offered in Europe. This can create new opportunities, but it does not tell me how sustainable such an offer will be.

Before speaking with a supplier, I therefore look at the product’s export development and any ongoing trade proceedings. I use this information to put the producer’s statements into context. Trade data does not show individual business relationships, and an anti-dumping investigation does not prove that a specific producer is under sales pressure. Both help me identify where I need to ask more detailed questions.

If larger volumes or a price that stands out are suddenly offered, I want to understand the background. Is the producer building up the European market for the long term, or is this a temporary shift in volumes? The answer affects how I assess the offer within our purchasing strategy.

For me, a reliable partnership does not develop from a short-term market situation. It develops when the producer and the buyer understand the basis on which they are planning together.

That's the chemistry.
